In June 2006 its members voted to change the name of the organization to the "American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities," rejecting the options to become the AAID or AADD. The American Association on Mental Retardation continued to use the term mental retardation until 2006. However, I'm not sure what the currently accepted term is.
That said, I'm pretty sure mental retardation is a PC no-no ('tard is for sure). To say they are all mentally retarded would be a gross generalization.
As it is, there's a broad spectrum of cognitive ability within people with Down's. To be clear, you'd probably want to expand your definition of mental retardation to go beyond just Down's syndrome (which is caused by an extra chromosome). Did some new shit come out? I mean It's not like I'm saying they aren't people or they should be killed or something, I'm just saying they operate at a lower level. Is this wrong? Are you telling me they aren't genetically inferior? I mean really tell me cause this is what I have been led to believe for years. I thought they had an extra chromosone that made them mentally slower. Ok then learn me so I can be a better person. That you even ask the question suggests you've never actually expended any time or effort getting to know "those retards". That would be the equivalent of old people wanting to be called "Grumpy people" to embrace their stereotype and then (a few decades later) insisting that people stop using "Grumpy" to mean grumpy, because it hurts their stereotype. IF (big if) homosexual men ("the group") want to be called "Gay", then it is pretty silly to for them to expect that a pre-existing meaning of the word should cease to exist after they willingly assumed the word to embrace that meaning. I did the research 5+ years ago, if I'm incorrect, I'd like to be corrected.)
(Feel free to correct me on any of the above. Gay = The title for the people group of homosexual men, because they wanted to embrace who they were. Gay = The homosexuals people were trying to disparage by connotating that homosexuality was stupid and wrong (also, the gay = happiness angle went towards the "pretty boy" characteristic sometimes associated with homosexual men), to Gay = word so outdated and uncool that it became synonymous with stupid, etc., to When in the '80s the homosexual movement decided to embrace the "Gay" word, they were 100% aware of its connotation. The problem with this is that historically, Gay = Stupid predates when Gay = homosexual man. Minimizing the group by minimizing their name is, in its own way, a slur against the group and against what they've spent a good number of years (and a few lives) fighting for. Imagine.I'd just point out, too, that a large part of the distaste for the use of "gay" as a putdown involves a group of people that have been subjected to discrimination and outright acts of violence. You're sat on Twitter writing hateful tweets about a newly married couple within your own community because they dared dance to Stupid Love at their wedding. The wAY HE LOOKS INTO HIS EYES AT THE BEGINNING AND RUBS HIS ARM OMGGGGG IM CRYINGGGGF To my future husband, we are definitely dancing to lady gaga even if i can’t dance Look how happy they are ! Leave them alone !!!! /zNGt6qUJu0Īnyway one person's cringe is another person's adorable & while our ability to get married is still brand spanking new I will be happy for any & all queer people who want to take part in a tradition that's historically been denied to us, no matter their celebratory predilections
If we can’t be happy for two gay men joyfully celebrating their wedding in whatever way they choose then really, what’s the point? /m40ZXqc3Vn Some of you are really letting the internalised homophobia *out* in your reactions to this huh
Other users defended the newlyweds, especially at a time where marriage equality in the US is potentially under threat. That video of the couple dancing to stupid love at their wedding makes me home of phobic Me looking at that stupid love gay wedding video /jHGMLP297R
